AfriCan Theatre Ensemble recognizes the power of live art to inspire and renew the human spirit and to forge human relationships across cultures, creeds, ethnicities, ideologies, genders, and social classes.
To that end, our work presents the different theatrical idioms, traditions and experiences of Africa and in so doing creates an avenue for cultural exchange between Africa and Canada.
Set in a Harlem hotel room, The Meeting showcases an imaginary debate between two remarkable icons of our time. Martin Luther King, Jr. passionately defends non-violence as a means of advancing civil rights for a people who have been denied. Malcolm X counters with evocative images of those who are shackled and for whom he believes freedom ought to be pursued by “any means necessary.” Who wins out in this riveting and timeless argument?
"For someone who watches a lot of theatre in this town, there are still so many companies to discover. And it's always a treat to discover one as entertaining as this one. I would certainly seek out more work by AfriCan Theatre Ensemble, and I think this double bill is a good intro because as the name suggests, you get to see some wrath and a little bit of play, so something is guaranteed to suit your appetite."
