Balancing the Books

AfriCan Theatre Ensemble, like most theatres in Canada, is a not-for-profit society. We are also a registered charity, # 869973677RR0001.

This means that we are allowed to raise money, as long as we use it for the benefit of society, in line with our charter. We are not supposed to make money, and we’re not supposed to lose money. It’s a balancing act.

Where does our money come from?

  • Government arts funding (growing, but not nearly enough)
  • Private foundations (not much yet)
  • Box office (buy tickets please!)
  • Private donations
  • Corporate donations
  • Fundraising (the African Soiree!)
  • Ads in our programs

In addition, people help by donating time, skills, and things that we need. Media sponsorships reduce costs of promotion.

Why do we need your help?

Government funding provides only a small portion of what we need to operate. We need money to pay actors, musicians, set builders, technicians, scenic painters, seamstresses. We also need to pay the rent, buy materials for costumes and sets, cover administrative costs, pay for publicity and advertising.

Your contribution demonstrates that ATE really matters to you. It’s a vote of confidence. It gives us strength to carry on.

Please give us your support.
